All students that learn to read begin with the same basic fundamental skills. Students learn to identify upper and lowercase letters, learn letter sounds, and how the letter arrangement or letter order forms words. Students then progress to learning print awareness skills such as to begin reading at the top of a page, and read to the bottom. Knowing to read words from left to right is print awareness too.

Kids Academy has a series of videos that teach these basic skills. Beginning with the most basic of concepts, the first video teaches children that every word that is heard can be written down. Children learning how to read for kindergarten level, see easy three-letter words demonstrating this premise. The video shows how the letters D-O-G make the word DOG. The learner hears the name of each letter and then the word. Students viewing the video can read along! Further, students learn the names of each uppercase letter of the alphabet in a fun video that writes each letter, and then a fun animation with a character or object with that letter sound moves across the screen.

With other videos in this series, students progressing from Kindergarten to learning how to read for Grade 1, view letters that make a word. The letters given in the example are not in the correct order and must be unscrambled to make the correct word. Students practice and learn to read the one syllable words given in the examples. Students that are beginning to learn to read with phonics benefit from this instruction using one syllable CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.

In more videos, students learn that words in a sentence have a space between them. Students clearly see that without these spaces, the words are difficult to read. The videos instructs learners to begin reading from the top of a page and then from left to right.

Teachers in the school as well as the home classroom that need resources on learning to read for kids find these videos are a great addition to daily instruction. Students learn letter identification, read one syllable words, and print awareness concepts.
